A Place Where Clay Changes Lives
The Claypit was founded in 2022 by me, Rachel Swift, with a vision to create a welcoming space where people could experience first-hand the transformative power of clay. I don't do things by halves; I have poured my energy into creating this space for others to enjoy. Whether it's meeting new people, rediscovering a creative skill from years ago, or taking the brave first step towards learning something completely new, I have seen the Claypit grow into a vibrant and supportive community that welcomes everyone. The people who are part of this community have changed my life in ways I could never have imagined and given me a sense of purpose that was missing before.
30 Years of Clay Expertise
With over 30 years of experience working with clay, I bring a unique combination of expertise as a ceramic artist, tutor, conservator, and archaeologist. My career has included working for the British Museum and heritage organisations around the world, giving me a deep appreciation and understanding of the role clay has played in human lives for thousands of years. My favourite pots are quite niche! They're the beautifully decorated prehistoric ceramics made in what is now southeastern Turkey around 7,500 to 8,200 years ago.
From Complete Beginner to Confident Maker
The Claypit has grown into more than a studio. We have a pathway that supports people at every stage of their ceramics journey. From introductory experiences and beginner courses to regular classes, memberships, and independent making, our aim is to help every student develop skills, confidence, and their own creative voice. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing someone go from saying "I've no idea what I'm doing" to becoming a confident maker who can't imagine life without clay.
